Work began today tearing the old concrete and reinforcing steel from the bridge. First to go was the sidewalk and bridge edge along the northern side of the bridge. Trucks will begin hauling away materials on Tuesday. Recyclable material will be handled by local companies and other material bill be used as fill.
Demolition exposed the bridge’s original sandstone abutments which were salvaged and rescued for the 19769 rebuild. The sandstone sections are again going to be used in the new bridge although they will be a part of the bike and walking path that is planned to go beneath the new structure.
One of the original stones will be placed in a city park, probably Alum Creek, as part of a historical display of the bridge.
