Original Sandstone Abutments

by Gary Gardiner on August 6, 2010

The sandstone blocks used in the construction of the first Main Street Bridge over Alum Creek sit exposed after the most recent bridge was removed. The first bridge, built in 1894, was a truss bridge that spanned the river for teh first time.

The second bridge, built in 1969, reused the sandstone blocks for the abutments.

The bridge being built as a replacement will have a new style abutment but the sandstone blocks are being reused beneath the bridge as barriers for a planned walkway and bike path joining to the existing paths.

Some of the unused blocks may end up in Alum Creek Park as a reminder of the original bridge.
